The law on dangerous dogs in Spain obliges their owners to request an administrative license from the City Council of the municipality of residence . In order to obtain it you must: Be of age. Not have a criminal record linked to violent acts. A certificate of physical capacity and a certificate of psychological fitness (can be processed at any private center officially authorized to issue certificates). Prove the contracting of civil liability insurance for domestic animals with coverage of no less than 120,000 euros. This license will be valid for 5 years and must be renewed by the owner upon completion of those 5 years.
Municipal registry for potentially dangerous dogs The dangerous dog law in Spain also requires owners to register their pet in the Registry of Potentially Dangerous Animals of their municipality with a period of no more than 15 days from the acquisition of the license that we mentioned in the previous point. In said Registry, a record will be recorded that includes: The owner's personal data The characteristics of the animal that make its identification possible The usual place of residence BYB Directory and the specification of the use that will be given to the animal: as a domestic animal, guard dog , etc. A history in which the owner will report the incidents, if any, caused by his pet, as well as any sale, donation, loss, theft or transfer of the same, having to communicate these to the Registry within a period of no more than 48 hours from the incident, sale, loss, etc.
If we move our dog to a different municipality than the usual one for a period of more than three months, we are obliged to register again in the Registry of the new municipality. Safety measures for dangerous dogs in public spaces Royal Decree 287/2002 establishes a series of mandatory safety measures to comply with when our dog circulates in public spaces. Failure to comply with any of them may be grounds for sanctions: The owner must always carry with him the administrative license that we mentioned above. The dog must always be muzzled and attached to a leash of no more than 2 meters in length. A single individual may not walk carrying more than one dog considered a potentially dangerous breed.
